Symmetric Square by Astro ODV
You might find yourself absorbed in the many details of Astro’s work. Astro ODV adapted his Symmetric Square to the building’s architecture, considering he worked on a structure designed by Mecanoo, a renowned worldwide architectural firm. Through swirly calligraphy and optical effects, he further accentuates the building upon which he has painted. In this unique piece, Astro has chosen a palette of blue tones, which contrast harmoniously with the graceful gray curls, conveying the illusion of depth. The blue tones and overall design complement the central vertical segment of tiles used in the center of the building.
About the artist:
Astro started to be an artist in the early 2000s. Over 15 years, he mainly produced complex Wildstyle graffiti, already showcasing the calligraphic forms that would later become his signature style. Subsequently, he transitioned from letter-focused art to developing abstract pieces based on his calligraphy, dedicating three years to this pursuit. During a project in Charleville Mézières named “Home 2”, he had the idea of incorporating perspective into their forms while creating an in-situ artwork.
The artist was born in Sarcelles but grew up in Villiers-Le-Bel in the northern suburbs of Paris. Inspired by a city rich in graffiti and street art, being a writer was surprisingly not his first attempt at art; he was a beat maker when he was younger and a rollerblader in the street category (advanced level). An injury caused him to stop participating in sports, but it allowed him to indulge in graffiti and art in general. These many creative activities demonstrate his versatility, and that we should never stop pursuing greatness in life: what today is a problem can become our strongest suit tomorrow!
